Ethiopian athletes made history at the 2018 World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, UK, winning all but the 800m on both the men’s and women’s distance events. Ethiopia ranked 2nd overall and 1st from Africa on the medal table with a record of 5 medals (4 Golds and 1 Silver medals).
1. Genzebe Dibaba won the women's 3000m and 1500m and became the first woman in history to win 1500m/3000m double at a World Indoor Championship.
2. Samuel Tefera added the 4th 1500m Gold for Ethiopia after 8 years. First Gold was won by Haile Gebresilase in 1999 and then Deresse Mekonene in 2008 and 2010.
3. Yomif Kejelcha defended his 3000m title in a style winning the race by a big margin. Selemon Barega outkicked Bethwel Birgen of Kenya to make it an Ethiopian 1-2 sweep.
At World Indoor Champs, there can only be a max of 2 athletes per country but Ethiopia had 3 men in the men's 3000m (Yomif Kejelcha, Selemon Barega, and Hagos Gebrhiwet); Yomif was an automatic qualifier with a wild card from his 2016 win in Portland, Hagos earned iaaf Indoor tour points, and Barega was the top pic from Ethiopia as he ran the fastest indoor 3000m run this year in his first ever indoor race. The trio almost made a 1-3 medal sweep as Gebrhiwet finished a close 4th place.
