In recent years, community leaders, activists, environmental advocates, and policymakers have seen the benefits of green jobs and social entrepreneurship as a way for communities that have been impacted by environmental injustice, disinvestment, underdevelopment, and poor economic infrastructure to engage local citizens including youth in sustainable development efforts and community revitalization programs. On this panel, the group will discuss some of these efforts in the region to perform grassroots economic development particularly success stories that have engaged youth, improved environmental conditions, and led to a rejuvenated sense of spirit and community. The panelists will discuss green jobs programs that attendees can use to receive green jobs training and state and local level revitalization programs including funding for sustainable development initiatives. In addition, the panelists will discuss some of the challenges they have faced, lessons learned in overcoming these challenges, best practices, and next steps for the region.
