Self-determination in Black ethnic territories=Vivir Sabroso. In the YVC meeting with @harryc1379 on April 28th, 2022, we learned about Afro-Colombian everyday life practices and ways of knowing. These are based in taking care of territory and future generations in the Pacífico Colombiano.
Harrison, is an Afro-Colombian leader and scholar-activist. Finishing his Ph.D. in territorial planning and sustainability, he has dedicated his life to the place and people he loves: El Pacífico.
As his last post says on Instagram @harryc1379: “Mi gran amor, el pacífico colombiano. Todo por este territorio y por asegurar que siga siendo negro, biodiverso y bonito. Es decir, que se pueda.” [My great love, the Colombian Pacific. I’ll do anything for this territory, to assure that it continues being Black, biodiverse, and beautiful. All that to say that, yes, we can.”
Harrison works to defend ancestral Afro-Colombian peoples’ rights to be Black. Vivir Sabroso (living savor-fully) is a way of life for Black communities of the Pacífico Colombiano, as he explains. Taking care of and defending the Chocó rivers/rainforests is part of who Black communities are and what they do day-to-day. Yet, their everyday ways of life are threatened by violence having to do with illegal armed groups, extractive industries like oil palm plantations, and drug trafficking.
How do you identify? What would you do anything for?
