To date, Europe has been relatively spared from genetically modified crops and food. That's because you - citizens, consumers and farmers - don't want GMOs on your plates or in your fields.
The European Parliament has taken a strong position against the authorisation of GMOs, with the Greens taking the lead in pushing for this.
But the European Commission continues to support GMOs through attempts to authorise a new genetically-modified maize variety (GM 1507) and renationalising the authorisation process, which could open the door to GM crops in Europe.
The incoming European Parliament will have a direct say in electing the next president of the European Commission. That means voters in the European elections can influence the make-up of the next Commission...and its stance on GMOs.
EU citizens have a right to choose what they want to consume. You can use your democratic right to put pressure on MEPs to fight against GMOs.
For a Europe without GMOs, every vote counts.
