When starting your PM career, most people start at the IC level; as individual contributors. However, the greater the scope of the product, the more likely that there will be a people managing PM responsible for its overall direction.
Individual contributors:
At the IC level, the PM is still expected to be the unofficial leader of the XFN group. Individual contributors are also expected to align objectives and goals between all the groups and orgs that are working on a particular product. The IC PM ensures that everyone is aligned and bought in to the overall vision of the product. The IC PM also owns the roadmap and the vision for the product.
People managers:
Most responsibilities from the IC role stay. But a large addition to the work of the people manager PM is to actually manage the team:
- setting goals and strategic areas of focus
- working together on deliverables and creating stretch goals
- creating long-term work surfaces and areas
- career progression
- mentoring
- fostering collaboration between your team and adjacent teams
- unblocking your team and helping with execution
- helping craft vision and roadmap
- planning for performance reviews
- setting and updating requirements, deliverables and expectations
- maintaining team morale and cohesiveness
- evaluating team and individual contributor team members' performance
Building out the team and recruiting become very important aspects of the people manager's job also: unlocking headcount for your team; growing your team, by explaining the business and organizational need in extra PM resources.
As you can see, the difference between these two types of PMs is quite significant. Communication skills become vital for people managers and a huge part of success of the role is how well one can build and keep the team happy, thriving and in the right roles to best take advantage of the available product opportunities.
As an individual contributor, you can really focus on doing the right thing for your product, spending your time and energy on users and their problems, formulating a product vision driving alignment, and executing on these objectives.
As a people manager, you can really scale your impact; i.e. if you have 4 people on your team, you can theoretically get 4X more done.
Ultimately, both roles give you great opportunities for learning and become a better all-around product manager.
