Statues of Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria have been ripped down in Canada amid mounting anger over the discovery of unmarked graves near former boarding schools belonging to more than 1,000 Indigenous children.
Protesters gathered outside the Manitoba legislative building in Winnipeg on Thursday, Canada's national holiday, toppling a statue of Queen Victoria and covering it in red paint. A smaller statue of Queen Elizabeth was also toppled nearby. The royals are seen as representative of the country’s colonial history.
At least ten churches also suffered damage in Calgary, in the western province of Alberta, according to local media.
