Aegon the Conqueror has just finished fighting in Essos to put down Volantis and now has begun to turn his eyes to Westeros along with his two sister wives, Visenya and Rhaenys. Aegon had control of Balerion, the black dread, the only dragon that survived the Doom of Valryia and was still alive. His sister's controlled two other dragons that had hatched on Dragonstone, Vhagar and Meraxes.
Aegon had been interested in Westeros long before he set sail to conquer it. Aegon and his sister Visenya had visted the Citadel of Oldtown in their youth and the Arbor as guest of Lord Redwyne. Some even claimed Aegon had visited Lannisport. Years before Aegon sailed to conquer Westeros, he had a huge slab of wood, fifty feet long, carved into the shape of Westeros and painted to show all the woods, rivers, towns, and castles of the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon knew that Westeros was divided into 7 kingdoms, with 2 or 3 of them constantly at war with each other.
Torrhen Stark ruled in the North, Ronnel Arryn (a young boy whose mother Sharra Arryn ruled as Regent) in the Vale, Fingers and the Mountains of the Moon, Harren the Black in the Riverlands, Loren I Lannister in the Westerlands, Mern IX Gardener in the Reach, Argilac Durrandon (Argilac the Arrogant) in the Stormlands, and Meria Martell, Princess of Dorne a blind, balding woman of 80 known as the Yellow Toad.
