'Terror Street' is a 00 gauge model railway layout I have begun building at a model railway club. The idea came after an email discussion with Mike Harris at Model Rail magazine. He mentioned Victorian London and after that my mind went into overdrive considering putting strange and dangerous people around the layout.
A little bit later I came up with the train crash as the centre-piece, based upon the 1985 Paris train crash.
And so 'Terror Street' was born. The terror comes from both the accident and also the unsavory characters that adorn the neighbourhood. Some famous, some infamous.
Later on I plan to get a LB&SC (or similar) Terrier loco to pull a couple of small passenger coaches and just stop short of hitting the derailment which is a Dapol Pug pulling wagons. This will be the auto-shuttle component.
In the foreground will be a Peckett in Huntley & Palmers colours delivering biscuits or wheat to the brewery over the shunting puzzle section. This means that when at the club I can have operational fun with this layout as a shunting puzzle.
Inspiration comes in many forms:
'Ripper Street' TV series is set during this period and I recommend it.
I have also seen a couple of 'Jack the Ripper' movies, one made in 1988 for the BBC, and the other made more recently called 'From Hell'.
I have also completed the Jack the Ripper tour to try and visualise this part of town.
Of course Mike Haris at Model Rail planted the seed of the idea by mentioning a Victorian layout with creepy characters. I then put in some names, and added a train crash, and took it from there.
