The Supreme military council (Of the Free Syrian Army) said that, the Free Syrian Army began a new battle named Al Bayaa in an attempt to liberate Deir Ezzor military airport using all types of heavy arms and artillery. The operations started on 20 December by shelling the regime Air Defence Battalion and their aircraft hangars located inside the airport, using mortars and heavy artillery. The soldiers and officers barracks were also targeted with intense FSA shelling.
Omar Abu Laila, SMC's official spokesman for Eastern Front operations said that the significance of this battle lies in the fact that the airport itself is considered a principle means of breaking the regime siege imposed on Deir Ezzor city. Abu Laila added that the airport is also a significant supply route between army forces in the mountain near the airport and vice versa.
The FSA has been trying to take this Airport for quite some months all their offensive have been unsuccessful and the Syrian Army managed to keep their position by repelling any infiltration attempt.
FSA sources claim that many of the Soldiers in the airport are retreating and that their offensive has been successful and claim it is a matter of hours or a couple days before they can completely "liberate" the airport.
It is unknown how many fighters are involved in this battle but it is known that multiple brigades are involved in the battle namely: Ahfad Al Rasul (Grandchildren of the prophet), Al-Qaqaa Brigade, Qutah Al Shahid Badi and some more brigades which are related to the Free Syrian Supreme Military Council.
