The Deutsches Eck is an artificial headland in Koblenz at the confluence of the Moselle and the Rhine . Originally named after a nearby branch of the Teutonic Order , it is best known today for the monumental equestrian statue of the first German Emperor Wilhelm I erected there in 1897.
The Kaiser Wilhelm Monument , commissioned by the Rhine Province to mark the 100th birthday of the monarch, was intended to commemorate the founding of the German Empire in 1871 and followed the tradition of many patriotic monuments erected during the Imperial period . The statue was destroyed shortly before the end of the Second World War , [1] and from 1953 to 1990 its base served as a " Memorial of German Unity". Since its purpose was fulfilled after reunification , a replica of the original sculptural group was placed back on the plinth in 1993 after controversy.
The Deutsches Eck is the symbol of the city of Koblenz and a major attraction for tourists . The Rhine facilities (Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer) branch off here on the left bank of the Rhine, and the Peter-Altmeier-Ufer on the right bank of the Moselle .
