A Nippers Video Visit to Joe's Cafe, 536 State Street, Santa Barbara. Joe's was moved up the street from the original location about 20 years ago. A classic roadhouse dating from 1926, it once was where drinks were more important than food. And the drinks were real adult drinks that could knock-out an elephant! Since under the ownership of Gene Montesano, both food and drinks have been elevated in quality. The walls are filled with historic Santa Barbara photographs and now the two rooms have been artfully opened up. Checkered tabled cloths don't mean a checkered past - Joe's has always been the hangout for locals and on weekends the bar is three deep with students. The menu is filled with all-American favorites from steaks, pasta and Omaha sandwiches to French dip and lamb shank. Other usual fare like pastrami or tuna fish sandwiches are popular and generous in size.
