Italian members of the Hand of Cain anti-death penalty lobby group staged an 11th hour sit-in outside the US embassy in Rome on Wednesday (22/04) to protest against the impending execution, in Texas, of Joseph Cannon. Cannon was put to death by lethal injection at 2300gmt on Wednesday. By the age of 17, Cannon already had a criminal record. A frequent juvenile violator and runaway, he was facing jail for a burglary unless he could find a stable living environment. An attorney - Ann Walsh - whose brother had represented Cannon, was persuaded to let the boy stay with her. When she came home for her lunch one day, he shot her at least six times as she begged for her life. He tried to rape her, then stole her daughter's car. Now 38, Cannon has spent more than half of his life on death row.
