This is one epic long song. It’s cool that this album is really doing well and it’s now been in the top 10 Official Progressive Charts for 3 months. I’m really thankful and honoured that I was a part of making this.
As drummers, our role is to provide a beat and in most cases, add our own musical interpretation to a song. For me it’s quite simple: respect the music! If it’s not metal, don’t make it sound metal. If it’s not gospel or fusion, don’t put gospel chops on it! Set your ego aside. Speak to the song writer and discuss their vision for the songs, then using your skills make their vision become a reality. There is a time and a place to show off your skills but when you’re recording a song or an album for someone, always, always put their interests first. If they tell you that you can do whatever you want, then that’s the time to go nuts if you wish to. It’s a balance between showcasing your skills, doing what you think sounds good and at the same time catering to the artist’s needs.
This song is quite structured. Nick sent me the basic guide drums and then we discussed what he wanted, which included atmospheric sounds, big drums, loud cymbals and some other nerdy drum stuff. Aside from this, he gave me free rein to do what I wanted. This version is what I play live with additional hihats and cymbal ride in the solo sections to keep everyone in time. Slightly different from the album version but the main and prominent drum parts are the same.
