The commonest reason for a swollen knee is a trauma. The other reasons may be achondromalacia or arthritis or infections or other common reasons are neoplastic and other conditions . We have to ascertain if a single joint is involved or there is other associated joints are swollen or not and the symptoms complex has to be ascertained by the clinician. The commonest reason is a traumatic condition, it has to be ascertained if it is serious trauma or a minor trauma. If it is a minor trauma, it can be treated with ice packs compressions, rest and pain management and most of the injuries can heal by themselves. Some of the knee injuries may to heal on their own. in such cases associated symptoms like giving away sensations, locking has to be ascertained and the clinician has to evaluate, clinically and also sometimes investigations like MRI or x-rays has to be ascertained to know the seriousness of it. The more serious injuries that require intervention are the circulate ligament injures or the collateral ligament injuries. So these has to be ascertained , the seriousness of it. The minor injuries I have told how it can be managed.
