A method for creating distorted bass synths similar to the sounds of Mick Gordon's DOOM soundtrack and Ludwig Göransson's score for the movie Tenet, using a handful of plugins and Ableton Live.
I love the gritty bass synths and experimental, industrial or 'corrupted' sounds heard in these things and wanted to try making some myself with what I have available to me to use in my own music, such as my projects @luotheband & @CactuarCollective.
The only problem with trying to do that is these composers used some modular synths and guitar effects pedals to make these sorts of sounds, particularly some quite unusual or rare & expensive boutique units, and I don't own any of these.
This is basically my cheaper, simplified way of getting these types of gritty bass sounds using FX that are built into Live, along with a few plugins that are more readily-available.
This method is loosely based on Mick Gordon's description of his 'DOOM Instrument/FX Array':

Some of the FX choices and setup in my method are meant to emulate parts of the DOOM Array - such as using Live's 'Amp' effect to fulfill the role of a few different distortion pedals, and the OTT Compressor setup to try and simulate the gated mini-amp feedback part of Mick Gordon's FX chain.
Also inspired by Mr. Bill's 'Mudpies' Sound Design Method:
