A reader from the UK wrote to me when he arrived in Montevideo and said: "Karen, what the hell is going on??? Wherever I go, there are all of these people in the street walking around and they are smoking a drink" 🤔🤣🤣
I came to talk to Pablo, an old friend of my family, so that he can tell us all about what is this drink that all of these Uruguayans are walking around drinking? 🧉
What do you need? The mate is where you place the herbal tea. The yerba mate, the herbal tea itself. The bombilla is a straw with a strainer at the end. And lastly, the thermos flask, where you put the hot water.
First, heat the water to fill the flask. It shouldn't be boiling, so you don't burn the leaves 🌡️
Then, put the yerba inside the mate, to then fill the mate with the tea to three quarters fall. With the hand on the top, shake it a bit to generate a space on one side and a little mountain (la montañita) on the other side. Add some room temperature water 💧
Wait 2 minutes for the leaves to soak in the water.
Finally, insert the bombilla into the mate with a diagonal movement downwards. Serve the water close to the bombilla and away from the montañita. The idea of the montañita is to have some leaves that stay dry, so that when the wet leaves lose the flavor, you can turn the tea and mix the used leaves with fresh.
