In April 2015, a 7.8 earthquake caused widespread destruction in Nepal. destroyed approximately 289,000 houses and damaged a further 255,000, causing widespread homelessness. Rebuilding needed to begin urgently and on a large scale. Fired-clay bricks are the main building material in Nepal but the brick sector was heavily impacted with about US$ 10 million in losses. 500 out of 720 brick kilns in 20 districts were damaged, while in Kathmandu the impact was near total with 99 out of 100 kilns damaged.
This video looks at a project set up by CCAC partners to rebuild the Nepalese brick industry, so that it is less polluting, more efficient and produces higher quality bricks.
The video was produced by CCAC Partner the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
