One of the first steps in having successful cheetah cubs is introductions between males and females.
During this process the keepers let the males in to a hallway where they can go see the females through the mesh. One of the first signs that a female is in heat or coming in to heat is when the males "stutter bark" this is a vocalization that tells the keepers that successful introductions could be right around the corner.
Once the female shows interest back and chirps at the male introductions can begin.
