Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 4 sectors where gorilla trekking is done; in each sector there are a number of habituated gorilla families that are either open to ekking or gorilla habituation in Uganda; however there are other areas coming up like Nyabaremura which allows only gorilla habituation.
The sectors include; Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga and Nkuringo in the southern parts of the mighty impenetrable equatorial forest, the only habitat where Gorillas and Chimps leave together in a natural environment in Uganda.
The great apes population stands at about 463 mountain gorillas in Bwindi living in 50 groups and there is a presence of about 13 solitary individuals according the 2019 census, this means that groups have increased from 36 in 2011 to 50.
The global population of gorillas stands at 1,063 including those in the Virunga mountain range in Rwanda and DRC, with Uganda being home to over 50 per cent of this global population in its Bwindi and Mgahinga national parks. Mountain gorillas can only be found in these three countries.
