In the past year, A.I. has taken a powerful leap forward. Generative A.I. tools can now write sonnets and speeches, produce original art, and create dead-ringer photographs. This is prompting excitement in democracies around the world, but it’s also raising alarm bells. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief A.I. scientist, heralds a “new age of enlightenment,” while the “godfather of A.I.” Geoffrey Hinton warns of the “existential risk of what happens when these things get more intelligent than us.” With power comes risks: What if the technology
gets in the hands of bad actors, or what if humans lose control? How can we use A.I. to improve democracy and help solve problems, and how do we manage the problems it might create?
