Lesser Yellowlegs are elegant migratory shorebirds, with distinctive bright yellow legs that give them their name! They breed in the in the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada and make amazing migratory journeys of 100s of miles each Fall, to spend the winter in Central and South America and the Caribbean. The Caribbean is a key stopover sites for these birds to rest and refuel on their long migrations.
But, Lesser Yellows are in trouble; their populations have declined by an estimated 65-70% over the last 50 years. They are threated by habitat loss, agricultural intensification and climate change. This already declining species also faces the added pressure of hunting. In the Caribbean many thousands are shot each year, along with other shorebirds. We need this to change for Lesser Yellowlegs, and all shorebirds to thrive in the Caribbean and beyond!
