I usually don't get into aesthetics too much when I talk about things because I genuinely think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what looks horrible to one person may not look so to another. But, due to demand, I have managed to scrape together a list of locomotives that are, in my mind, legitimate eyesores. Five of them. That all look horrendous.
00:00 - Intro
01:16 - Class 43 Prototype
02:25 - ML 4000
03:54 - Class C53
05:48 - EMC 1800
06:58 - Triple Boiler Locomotive
"The British Rail Class 43 (HST) is the TOPS classification used for the InterCity 125 High Speed Train (formerly classes 253 and 254) power cars, built by British Rail Engineering Limited from 1975 to 1982, and in service in the UK since 1976. The class is officially the fastest diesel locomotive in the world, with an absolute maximum speed of 148 mph (238 km/h), and a regular service speed of 125 mph (201 km/h). The record run was led by 43102 (43302) and trailed by 43159."
"The Krauss-Maffei ML 4000 is a road switcher diesel-hydraulic locomotive, built between 1961 and 1969 by German manufacturer Krauss-Maffei in Munich, Germany. It generated 3,540 horsepower (2,640 kW) from two Maybach V16 engines. 37 examples were built for two North American railroads and one South American railroad."
"The Class C53 (C53形) is a type of 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in Japan from 1928 to 1929 designed by Hideo Shima and built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Rolling Stock Company Kisha Seizo and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Hitachi . A total of 97 Class C53 locomotives were built they operated until all 97 were retired in 1950. C53 45 is the only example of the class to be preserved."
"Electro-Motive Corporation (later Electro-Motive Division, General Motors) produced five 1800 hp B-B experimental passenger train-hauling diesel locomotives in 1935; two company-owned demonstrators, 511 and 512, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad's #50, and two units for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, Diesel Locomotive #1. The twin engine power unit layout and multiple unit control systems developed with the B-B locomotives were soon adopted for other locomotives such as the Burlington Route's Zephyr locomotives built by the Budd Company in 1936 and EMC's own EMD E-units introduced in 1937. The B-B locomotives worked as proof-of-concept demonstrators for diesel power with the service loads of full size trains, breaking out of its niche powering the smaller custom Streamliners."
"This extraordinary machine was built in 1888 for the Belgian State Railways. Once more the aim was to fit more boiler capacity between the driving wheels, and in this case it was done by having two smaller boiler barrels each side of the main boiler."
