Gandhiji didn't want partition of India. Gandhiji was a very disciplined and strategic leader. The only way he could prevent the partition of India is by recommending Mohd. Ali Jinnah for the position of Prime Minister.
At that time hindu and Muslim riots were already going on & he knew that India wont be able to control the situation without administrative support of Britisher. That means that asking British to stay even after independence.. He knew very well that India needs to be united to get freedom in real sense.
The Congress leaders particularly Nehru, Azad and Patel had decided that immediate independence was more important than the unity of India. They might have had their reasons. The British Government wanted partition. Jinnah wanted partition. Gandhji was isolated.
