Yangon was transformed into a “battle zone” as police attempted to disperse thousands of protesters across the city with tear gas and rubber bullets on March 2, Frontier Myanmar reported.
Arrests were also reported on Tuesday. Reporters Without Borders said at least 10 journalists were being held. Among them was Thein Zaw of the Associated Press.
At least six of these were reported locally to have been charged under Section 505 (a) of Myanmar’s penal code. According to Amnesty International, the section, which addresses incitement, is used “to target protected expression rather than addressing incitement to hatred, violence, or discrimination.”
This footage was filmed on Insein Road, and shows protesters dispersing as a thick cloud of tear gas hangs in the air.
