Today on Booze On The Rocks, we make the Singapore Sling cocktail served at the Raffles Hotel. Created by Chinese-born Ngiam Tong Boon in 1915 at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel, the Singapore Sling has passed the test of time. Although there are now, many versions found all over the world. Gin, Grand Marnier, cherry liqueur, herbal liqueur (typically Benedictine), pineapple, lime, bitters, and club soda are the main ingredients in this complex drink. The recipe was first made public in Harry Craddock's masterpiece "The Savoy Cocktail Book," released in 1930. It became the subject of subsequent recipes, and by 1948, David A. Embury claimed in his book "The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks" that no two published recipes were identical. The Singapore Sling is sophisticated, subtle, and ingredient-heavy at its best. It also begs for investigation, and s s a result, broad notes and nostalgia serve as the foundation for most "traditional" cocktail variations. Many contemporary variations tend to be excessively sugary beverages that depend more on grenadine and pineapple juice than on herbal liqueurs and fresh citrus. This recipe is as authentic to the original as one can make it. Try it out and let me know what you think.
