There are 7 countries around the world that are already net zero, meaning they’ve balanced the carbon they emit with the carbon they absorb.
1. Bhutan
The Himalayan country is 72% forest. Its trees absorb 9 million tonnes of CO2 a year.
2. Suriname
At 97% cover, the South American nation is the most forested on the planet.
3. Panama
It is 57% tree-covered. And planning to reforest another 50,000 hectares by 2050.
4. Guyana
The country has 14.48 million hectares of old-growth forest.
5. Gabon
This country is 1 of 6 countries located in the Congo rainforest. The least deforested of all the world’s major rainforests.
6. Madagascar
The African nation is a net carbon absorber. But rampant deforestation means it could soon be an emitter.
7. Niue
The volcanic island contributes less than 0.0001% of global emissions. But its forest absorb more than that.
