They have been a permanent fixture in Utrecht for years: the free lunchtime concerts in which young talent from the classical world plays in TivoliVredenburg. After a break of several months due to corona, the lunchtime concert is back, both physically and online, with a special Gaudeamus edition: new music by harp sextet Harp Sirens and Duo Ebano. In Harp Sirens, founded by Michela Amici, six harpists come together to play new works that offer cheerful colours not traditionally associated with the harp’s sound. The adventurous Duo Ebano is no ordinary clarinet-and-piano duo either: they play a lot of brand-new work, and in close collaboration with young composers explore the limits of their instruments with the help of electronics.
The concerts of these two young ensembles are supplemented with a selection of special video works by recently graduated composers. Additionally, Amici plays the piece Thin Air, that Composer Laureate wrote as an initiative of Festivals for Compassion in solidarity with everyone who was touched by corona in some way.
