(26 Feb 2021) A dozen Palestinian protesters on Friday clashed with Israeli security forces in the West Bank city of Hebron.
The clashes started after Friday prayers when Palestinians marched through the Israeli-controlled city centre holding banners calling the Israeli government to evacuate the settlers from the West Bank city of Hebron.
The troops responded with stun grenades and tear gas.
Hebron is the largest city in the West Bank, and a frequent flashpoint of violence between the tiny hard-line Jewish community and the Palestinian majority.
The Palestinians see the West Bank, captured by Israel in 1967, as the heartland of a future independent state and say the Jewish settlements there are illegal, a position that has wide international backing.
Israel says the presence of its settlers is justified by an ancient Jewish connection to Hebron going back to the days of the biblical patriarch Abraham.
