When iron is heated up, like most materials, its particles move further and further apart. This requires them to take up more volume. Conversely, when the temperature drops, a material's atoms move closer together. This effect takes place on a grand scale in the case of the Eiffel Tower.
It’s made up of so much iron that every summer when the temperatures are hotter, it gets 6 inches taller. That means in hot weather, the Eiffel tower is actually 1063.5 feet tall.
