STORYLINE:
PERUGIA, Italy (AP) _ After four years in prison, American Amanda Knox has a chance at freedom Monday. That's when an appeals court in Perugia, Italy, will decide whether she killed her British roommate.
Knox was convicted in 2009 along with then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito (rah-fy-EHL'-ay soh-LEH'-chee-toh) in the death of fellow student Meredith Kercher in what a lower court said began as a drug-filled sexual assault.
Knox and Sollecito are expected to make a final plea for their innocence as the appeals trial reconvenes and the jury begins its deliberations.
Knox and her family hope she will be set free after spending four years behind bars in what they say is a monumental judicial mistake. Prosecutors, who have depicted Knox as a manipulative liar, are seeking to increase her original 26-year sentence to life in prison.
