On this segment of The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, Mo Rocca meets with Curator of Transportation Matt Anderson to learn more about hybrid technology in history.
Hybrid technology refers to the use of two different energy sources to power one machine. Most commonly, when we think of hybrid technology, we think of 21st century fuel-efficient cars, but it can also be found in other vehicles and machines, and has been around for over 100 years.
Artifacts featured in this episode include a 1916 dual-power hybrid coupe by Woods Motor Vehicle Company, which sought to combine gasoline and electric power; a 2015 Ford e-bike prototype, which combines pedal power with an electric motor; and a 1916 gas-steam engine used at Ford's Highland Park plant to generate power for the assembly line.
