Today Wine-Searcher's Wine Director, David Allen MW tastes a fortified from the Banyuls apellation in Mediterranean southern France, near Perpignan and close to the border with Spain. The wine in question is Les Clos de Paulilles Banyuls Rimage 2013.
Les Clos de Paulilles has a history dating back to 1800 when it was created by the Bernadi Family. In 1975 the estate was the first to produce Banyuls in a Rimage style (like a Vintage Port). The estate also pioneered the use of Syrah and Mourvedre in making Collioure Rouge. The property was acquired by its current owners the Cazes Family, vignerons from Rivesaltes in 2012.
The Caze family stated making wine in Rivesaltes in 1895. In 1927 they acquired Mas Joffre, the former property of First World War leader Marshal Joffre. The family have been making their wines using biodynamic methods for 25 years now.
