Historically, Las Vegas rockers Escape The Fate were always about bringing the flash along with the decibels. And they’re pretty much still on point and on brand.
In this podcast from 2009, #AltPress founder Mike Shea corrals the members of ETF—new vocalist Craig Mabbitt, guitarist Monte Money, bassist Max Green and drummer Robert Ortiz—for a lengthy discussion regarding everything from the coolest places to hang in Las Vegas to their pursuit of style to the evident truth that they came to entertain, not hang out.
“It’s about the band wanting to be more than just a band,” Mabbitt offers when Shea brings up their penchant for full-on “rock” gestures than scene denizens. “We want to feel like we’re onstage putting on a show, and we’re different characters on the stage than what we are in real life.” Shea then ribs Ortiz for his lack of flamboyance for not showing up to the AP office in a fur coat, which ends with the drummer and Green going after each other good-naturedly for their respective versions of the truth.
The band members also drop some much-needed science on the world’s bands. Mabbitt reminds bands that people who want to see your band “will pay to be entertained, but if they’re going to listen to your music, they’re just going to steal it.” In addition to addressing Shea’s fake-it-till-you-make-it arguments when critics, trolls or rockers of a certain age discover ETF for the first time, they do discuss the best ways to engage fans, as well as their own mythology.
Team ETF also discuss the turns their lives have taken (personally and professionally) since the departure of vocalist Ronnie Radke. Green is particularly lucid about the situation (considering he did end up in Falling In Reverse for a brief stint), and Mabbitt talks about his tenures with blessthefall and the Word Alive.
It’s an interesting time capsule considering what happened in the interim. (You know, Money and Green’s departures, as well as Radke and Mabbitt’s legendary cease-fire meeting.) But this podcast not only reminds us what it was like 10 years ago, but it also has a lot of good advice for bands trying to get out of their garages and basements.
