A decade-long study by the Walter Sisulu University in the Eastern Cape has found that maize-meal that has been stored for over a month increases the chance of oesophageal cancer.
The study also found that the province has recorded the highest number of people with the disease.
This is due to many in the province living below the breadline, in extreme poverty.
The disease is seen as silent killer as the symptoms only show once it's at an advanced stage.
