A motion appointing Deputy Mayor and Miss World 2009, Kaiane Lopez, as Mayor has received unanimous approval in Parliament. Speaking in Parliament, the Chief Minister said the Mayor represents municipal and civic Gibraltar in a way that perhaps politicians cannot.
Fabian Picardo thanked the Speaker and current Mayor, Adolfo Canepa, for his service: a sentiment echoed by the House. The motion also appoints John Goncalves as Deputy Mayor, with the investiture ceremony on Tuesday at City Hall.
Today’s session of Parliament also saw the passing of three bills. One amended the Crimes Act to tackle the malicious sharing of private sexual photos, known as “revenge porn”, and to bring the section pertaining to grooming offences in line with UK law. A bill was passed for an act to permit the establishment of private foundations, with the Income Tax Act also amended to take this into account.
