Marches and rallies have held in dozens of countries, with Muslims marking al-Quds Day, which Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 declared as the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Iran's incoming president Hassan Rohani attended the events in Tehran, saying, 'The Zionist regime has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world for years and the wound should be removed." Later, Iranian state TV said Rohani's statements were 'misrepresented.' Similar bellicose anti-Israeli rhetoric was voiced by muslim leaders during rallies in Lebanon, Afghanistan, and India.
