On Saturday, June 19, 2021, the Tunnel to Towers Foundation welcomed Army Sgt. Christy Gardner to her new, mortgage-free smart home in Maine. Tunnel to Towers collaborated with A Soldier's Journey Home, a group comprising over 500 volunteers from 14 states, to build Sgt. Gardner’s home in just 2 weeks. Army Sgt. Christy Gardner joined the Delayed Entry Program in October 2004 and trained with a local Reserve unit until she graduated from Long Island University in the spring of 2005. Sgt. Gardner was stationed at Fort Hood and served in Area One in the Republic of Korea when she was catastrophically injured during peacekeeping operations on June 22, 2006.
Sgt. Gardner’s new custom-built smart home is specially designed to meet her needs and enables her to live independently as possible. Since sustaining injuries that left her critically injured, Sgt. Gardner has dedicated her life to her recovery, but she also dedicates a lot of her time to helping other injured veterans like herself.
Tunnel to Towers’ mission is to honor the sacrifices of our heroic military service members and first responders who have made supreme sacrifices in the line of duty by risking life and limb in protecting our communities and our country. Tunnel to Towers developed the In the Line of Duty Program which provides mortgage-free smart homes to our nation’s catastrophically injured
veterans and first responders that are specially modified for their mobility needs, as well as mortgage-free homes to Gold Star and Fallen First Responder families with young children.
