Charles V may have been one of the most powerful men in the world. Born into the House of Habsburg he inherited the Spanish throne and the Holy Roman Empire. His holdings stretched from the Spanish colonies in the Americas to Iberia, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Hungary. During his reign, Charles was at war with France and the Ottoman Empire but faced a domestic crisis during the Protestant Reformation. Although he tried to peacefully resolve it with Martin Luther, the split in the church was a crack in his power’s armor. As his health deteriorated due to gout and other illnesses, he split his empire giving his son Phillip the Spanish Empire and his brother Maximilian the Holy Roman Empire. He was the first leader to say that his empire was one in which the sun never set.
