The other railroad we visited when we went out west was the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The motive power for the excursions when we were there were K-36's 484 & 489, both of which burning a different fuel source. 484 burned coal and 489 burned oil. Both displaying how both fuels are important by putting on a great show as they made their way up and over Cumbres pass. Even though we only shot a portion of the railroad, we still had a phenomenal time out there!
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad runs on a portion of the Rio Grande's San Juan Extension that was constructed in 1880. The railroad was built to serve the Silver Mining district in Southwestern Colorado. Once the silver ran out, the railroad was used to transport other goods such as oil and live stock. The railroad's last big boom was in the 1960s when the railroad was used for the transportation of pipe for a new gas pipe line across the states of Colorado & New Mexico. In 1969, the railroad was granted permission to abandon its right of way. But then a year later in 1970, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad was formed and re-opened a portion of the San Juan Extension for excursion trains. Today over 50 years later, the railroad is still going strong and has been voted one of the best scenic railroads in America!
A special thanks goes out to Arkansas Locomotive Works who was our chase partner for this trip!:
