Repairing furniture legs, such as a sofa or chair leg, might seem intimidating. We show you how to repair the leg on this chair with the right parts and techniques. Learn about hanger bolts, tee nuts, and insert nuts. This is the hardware that holds on typical upholstered furniture legs.
2:04 This wingback chair had a loose leg. The leg just kept turning and wouldn't tighten. Once I unscrewed it, I noticed the hanger bolt was loose. This was an easy fix as I stock different size hanger bolts in my workshop. I simply used a longer hanger bolt to secure it in place. There was another problem though after I screwed the leg in place. The leg was still flexing under pressure.
3:51 To investigate further, I look out the staples on the dust cover, the fabric under the chair seat. This allowed me to see what needed repairing. It turned out that the chair wasn't assembled properly and the bottom of the chair frame wasn't secured to the corner block.
4:40 As the plywood frame wasn't very good quality, I decided to add an additional support block. I glued it in with epoxy and screwed the frame to the new block and the corner block.
7:54 I reattached the dust cover on the chair with my upholstery stapler. I reinstalled with nylon washer using an upholstery tack hammer and then screwed in the chair leg. It was rock solid and almost ready to go back to the customer. I noticed some chips and scrapes in the finish of the chair leg so I used a touch-up stain marker to disguise those marks so it looked as good as new.
I hope this gives you the knowledge to tackle a leg repair for an upholstered piece of furniture. All upholstered furniture is build on wood frames, so if you understand how to repair wood, you can repair pieces like this wingback chair.
