Finally, we have some exciting news on Tejas MK2 program & AMCA which we will be discussing in Todays’ video. Recently, ADA chief Girish S. Deodhare has revealed some recent developments related to combat aircrafts at an event by the Centre for Air Power Studies and Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers. We will cover both the update one by one. So let’s get started.
Earlier this year HAL has reported to have started the metal cutting for LCA Tejas MK2 program. However, the second wave of corona virus has derailed the original plan. Now the good news is that the ADA Chief has confirmed that the configuration for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk2 has been frozen. The detailed design for the same is complete. ADA is in the critical design review stage and soon metal cutting for lca mk2 will begin. The first roll out of Tejas MK2 is planned next year and the first flight in early 2023. ADA is well on track to achieve these goals. Once the prototype is rolled out it will take another 4 years for DRDO and ADA to completely test its flight controls, avionics and other parameters before its ready to enter the production which seems to be likely by 2027-28. The plan is to complete the production of Tejas MK2 before AMCA MK2 enters into production which will be somewhere close to 2035.
Now let’s quickly look into the development roadmap of AMCA. The design phase of the AMCA has been already sanctioned by government. ADA has started the initial design of the AMCA way back in 2009. If all goes per plan, the first flight of AMCA can be expected to begin between 2025 & 2026. The production of AMCA is likely to be kick start in the next seven to eight years. ADA is reportedly looking to commence production by 2026-28 and full-fledged production will commence by 2029. The development of AMCA will happen in two phases. In Phase-I, two squadrons of AMCA Mk-1 will be produced powered by American GE 414 engines. In Phase II, the four squadrons of AMCA MK-2 will be produced, which will be advanced version of AMCA with sixth-generation technologies and will be powered by indigenous engines likely to replace the imported GE 414 engines. DRDO is working with Rolls Royce for the development of engines with thrust of 110KN and above. The engine will power all the future jets of Indian Airforce. The Indian Air Force’s modernization road map involves the deployment of around 126 stealth fighters which is close to six squadrons consisting of 36 AMCA MK1 + 90 AMCA MK2 from 2032 onwards.
