Created during the 12th century in the Laura Monastery of Bursa (Turkey), the Marian Homilies manuscript features 82 miniatures by Jakovos from Kokkinobaphos. As a leading miniaturist of the second quarter of the 12th Century, he was committed for several works by the Komnenian aristocracy and his style became highly influential. Jakovos also anticipated features of the Palaiologan period.
His illustrated homilies are the most sophisticated surviving manuscripts to have been produced during the Komnenian era. In addition to the miniatures, he worked on beautiful initials with animalistic and phytomorphic elements. The most famous scenes are the enthroned Virgin with the Child (into the first large initial) and episodes from the Life of the Virgin Mary.
