The 75th Cannes film festival kicked off its 12 days of showcases and celebrations with a parade of Oscar winners on the red carpet. After two years in which the pandemic put a damper on one of the biggest film festivals, the masks are off and health passes are no longer needed.
American actor, producer, and director, Forest Whitaker, who is best known for films like "Ghost Dog" received an honorary Palme d'Or at the opening ceremony. Whitaker is no stranger to awards and has received an Academy Award for "The Last King of Scotland", however, the Cannes film festival holds a special place in his heart
SOUNDBITE - Forest Whitaker, US actor, director, and producer: "When I came to Cannes I was acknowledged as an artist for the first time internationally. It really changed my life and the trajectory of my career in some ways, because it allowed me to be seen as an artist and not just a player."
21 films will compete during the festival, in addition to a number of special screenings which includes "Top Gun: Maverick" and Mariupol 2, which is the Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius’ final film, before he was killed in Ukraine last month.
