Tales of Royal Bedchambers in Britain. Dr. Lucy Worsley.
In the days when the monarchy was the main – or even the only – fountain of preferment and fortune, proximity to the Queen or King was the fastest route to high position.
The monarch's "private" rooms, and especially her/his bedchamber, were places of power, actually crowded with intriguing courtiers.
This was reflected in the magnificence of their state beds… in which the monarch never slept!
The very elaborate ceremonies for getting–up ("levee") and going to bed ("coucher") strike us as totally out of this world, but every detail had a meaning in those times, and some horridly menial functions ("Groom of the Stool") were eagerly fought for, because they ensured access to the all–powerful sovereign.
Dr. Lucy Worsley, as entertaining as ever, leads us in contemplating the evolution of these quaint socio–political phenomena, from the Middle Ages to the Victorian Age.
