Today we are going to learn how to play Life by the Drop by Stevie Ray Vaughn on our guitar. This classic song is blues inspired, but it isn't what I would necessarily call a blues song, despite that fact that one of blues music's most popular artist recorded the song... oh yeah, I forgot to mention that Stevie didn't actually write this song, it was his friend from high school, West Dallas blues musician Doyle Brahmhall. Doyle actually wrote the song about his friendship with Stevie and how he views SRV, somehow knowing that he was destined for great things even when they were just teenagers jamming together in Texas.
The song has a lot of shuffles and cool rhythms, it clearly has a massive blues influence but it actually is a regular song in the key of A. If you solo over it you could use the blues scale as well but the A major scale would sound great. In the tutorial in addition to breaking down every shuffle, the intro lick using the blues scale we also break down the entire melody on the guitar as well so you can practice singing it note for note, so you can play an instrumental version or so you can transpose it an octave lower because it is really high. In learning to play it I am surprised how high Stevie could sing. I am not sure if he really had to scream his head off or if he got there easily, but these notes are way up there, with the highest being the F# above middle C.
