In this video I compare the sound quality between a stock speaker (28mm round in Athearn enclosure) and a model-specific Scale Sound Systems Coeval speaker (AHGS-SD70-CO8). Both recordings were made with the speakers installed in the locomotive, and recorded from a distance of about 12" with a shotgun mic. Sound level settings on the locomotive remained basically unchanged. I increased the overall sound level evenly on the video in post-processing to compensate for the lack of gain on the microphone.
The mic captures the essence of the sound, but can't reproduce it perfectly. However the video does a decent job of showing the stark difference between a stock speaker and a Scale Sound Systems offering. Much of the lower notes and character of the prime mover is completely lost with a stock speaker, whereas the Scale Sound Systems speaker brings those out and creates a much fuller sound.
