Radio operator & Gunner, 863rd Bomb Squadron, 493d Bomb Group, 8th Air Force.
Melvin Hurwitz (96) was born March 12, 1925, to Russian immigrants in Baltimore
and grew up in nearby Westminster, MD.
After graduating from high school, Melvin started college in Nashville, TN, but soon after joined the US Army. Melvin was inducted into the service in Baltimore and sent to basic training in Greensboro, NC, and then to the Army Air Corp training centers in Tennessee, Illinois, Arizona, and then to Dill Field in Tampa, Fl, where he was assigned as a radioman and waist gunner on a B-17, Flying Fortress,
863rd Bomb Squadron, 493rd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. The 493rd Bomb Group was the last bomb group assigned to the 8th Air Force in WW2.
Their journey to England started in Maine, flying to Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, and Whales. They were delayed in Greenland for ten days because of severe weather.
Arriving in England late in the war, Melvin’s B-17, displaying the name “Disorganized Confusion”’, flew only four combat missions when the war ended. However, his plane participated in the dropping of food supplies to the starving Dutch civilians and flew several missions returning French prisoners of war from Austria.
Arriving back in Sioux Falls, SD, United States, Melvin’s crew immediately started B-29 training in preparation for the ongoing war with Japan. While awaiting orders in Clovis, NM to the Pacific Theatre of Operations, The war ended.
After honorably discharged from the military, Melvin returned to Maryland and established jewelry businesses in Annapolis and Frederick, MD.
