Tawny chicks take a fall
These young owlets were living in a straw stack out in a field, and when a farmer had gone to move the bales, these youngsters fell to floor. The farmer did not know that the owls were nesting there, as tawny owls are notoriously secretive. Now the nest site was destroyed, and as the straw stack was in an isolated location, no nest structure could be put quickly put in place to replace it.
Rescue chicks
Due to their young age, these owl chicks could perish of cold in a short space of time as at this age they should be constantly brooded by their parent.
A plan hatches
I instantly thought of wild owl Luna and how she was still brooding unviable eggs and had a strong maternal instinct. I have past experience of introducing wild orphans into another nest and knew just what to do.
A successful rehabilitation
These owlets have now been living in their new nest for a week and are thriving under Luna's tender care. It is wonderful to watch her brood the youngsters - although it won't be long before they are too big to brood.
