Landini Associate's new retail format for Italy’s oldest supermarket chain, Esselunga, radically reinvents the global supermarket model layout, setting a new benchmark globally.

In the case of supermarkets placing payment stations in the most prominent and valuable space would seem, to us at Landini, not to make sense. So we agreed with our client to change this. After all, the front of any high street store is its shop window, normally a place where its product is promoted. We swung checkouts 90 degrees so they no longer monopolise the store's most valuable space, and replaced them instead with the theatre of food production. All this simply makes sense. Blindly following what others have done, just because it's the norm, doesn't.

Landini Associates’ design for Esselunga continues to roll out across Italy.

Scope was Master planning, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Wayfinding, Signage, Ticketing and Uniforms.
