Florence Nightingale was a nurse who lived during the Victorian times. she spotted that cleaner hospitals helped patients recover. She was a pioneer in statistics, using data to save lives.
Born in 1820, Florence was educated at home by her father. She was especially talented in mathematics. Florence wanted to be a nurse which at the time was a job that was looked down on by society, and her parents were against it. Most nurses back then were criminals who were taken from prison to serve! Anyway, Florence defied her parents wishes and went to train in Germany.
When the Crimean War started in 1853, Florence was already an accomplished nurse, well known by a few people in government. She was asked to go out to the Crimea and take charge of the hospitals. She was shocked by the awful conditions there; patients living in extremely dirty rooms and not receiving the care they needed.
Whilst there, Florence realised that most of the patients weren't dying of their wounds as people assumed, but of diseases unconnected to battle. She also started to realise the link between cleanliness and health. She took notes on the effect of a clean hospital and death rates and realised that she could help people recover simply by keeping the place clean. In doing so, she saved many lives during the Crimean conflict.
When she returned from the Crimea, she lobbied the government and the army to change healthcare. At first, people wouldn't believe her results. They didn't know back then about germs and they didn't really know how diseases spread. But eventually, they started to take her research seriously and hospitals got cleaner. She also campaigned for higher standards of care and opened her own school for nurses, professionalising nursing. She was a powerhouse that revolutionised healthcare.
